Top Ten Destinations…by clicks

Lonely Planet has come up with a new Top Ten Destinations, rather unscientifically comprised of the top ten destinations in terms of hits on their website. But the changes—and similarities from year to year—are interesting.

Egescov Castle, DenmarkThailand, Italy, Costa Rica, and India are still at the top, year after year. Mexico, Argentina, Vietnam, and Australia also made the list. But two new destinations scored this year: Peru and Denmark.  I’ve been to both , and can vouch for them, but Denmark is a surprise—not because it isn’t lovely—but because when I was there, people were always surprised to hear I was from the US and visiting Denmark. Almost invariably, they asked if I was researching my family’s genealogy, as though that would be the only explanation for staying in Denmark.

Here is a chart Adam, Lonely Planet’s Online Manager, created on the top destinations USA, UK, and Australia visitors look for.

I think the list of where US visitors want to go is really interesting - and completely different from the list I would personally compile! I want to go Paris, London, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Monaco, Japan

I bet the clicks from the U.S. about Guatemala probably have more to do with foreign adoptions (Guatemala ranks the third most popular behind China and Russia in foreign adoptions) than it does with visiting the volcanic country. While largely impoverished, it is a beautiful country. In Antigua, a Spanish colonial town, you can stay in a five-star resort for the cost of staying in a 3-star most other places. The town is quite lovely, with cobble stone streets and pretty churches.
