Top Ten Destinations for Independent Travelers

Another 2009 round-up list has been released; this one is BootsnAll’s Top 10 Destinations for Independent Travelers in 2009.Damascus, photo by Nick Leonard

Here are their picks:

Walking Tall release

  • Tasmania, Australia
  • Siem Reap, Cambodia
  • Bariloche, Argentina
  • Panama
  • Bangladesh
  • Sardinia, Italy
  • Senegal
  • Berlin, Germany
  • Damascus, Syria
  • Columbia

I’ve been to only two of their picks, but several are in my must-do list. But Berlin? Wouldn’t be my pick. BootsnAll’s backpacking traveler readers tend to be far more interested in nightlife than I am.

Comarca Kuna Yala: This is the premier beach destination in Panama, with 350 islands scattered off the Caribbean coast that offer picture-postcard beaches with powdery white sand, coral reef, piercing turquoise water, and clusters of swaying palm trees. The colorful Kuna indigenous population administers this province, and their fascinating culture is part of the reason to visit the region, too. The glitch is that scuba diving is prohibited, and lodging is mostly Robinson Crusoe rustic, but all you’ll want to do here anyway is swim, sun, and swing in a hammock.

Cambodia and Damascus are both on my list for later this year. Sardinia is perfect for independent travelers. I spent a week on the west coast, including Alghero, doing bicycling, hiking, walking and boat trips. After that, I hooked up with a local bicycle group for another more than a week of cycling. Though I could’ve done it safely on my own, I enjoyed the camaradeire.
